I'm glad people were able to register and start posting right away.
I created this free forum because there was a time crunch. @roscoe36 announced he was closing on July 9th, and it had been 13 days, yet there wasn't a consensus about where to go.
There wasn't another forum that seemed as good, either because of their layout, or because of the other community members.
Now that there's up, and there's a semblance of @roscoe36's forum staying together, I thought I would ask something.
I have my own domain and sports forum elsewhere. The domain doesn't have a Pistons name in it though. There are only about 13 registered members, and 4 active members. But I've had it up since June 2016, with a few more that check in from time to time.
Unregistered members can't view it. I changed that setting 1-2 months ago, to see if I could get people transitioning from lurker to active member.
I could create a section on there for the Pistons.
Here's the options that I see.
1) Stay at this Pro Boards site.
If people like the layout and usability, then that's fine. The limitations are that because I don't have direct access to the server, there's only so much customization that I can do.
That applies to both layout, and features / plugins.
After browsing the admin console though, it does appear there's some degree of control, like being able to modify the templates.
2) A)
Register and move to my other forum.
I'll create a Detroit Pistons section.
A bit of a warning though, for those that are concerned about the layout. There's more subforums on there (like for other sports).
It might make the main page longer in terms of scrolling, but it also makes it a bit more organized. Those that don't want to read about those other sports, don't have to check there.
I tend to think either a forum should just have one subforum, or have several to keep it organized. If 90% of the content is about one thing, then one subforum is fine. If people (such as me) like to talk about other things, then it's better to keep it organized and not clutter it up for people that don't want to read other stuff.
I do have a "View Unread Posts" as well as "View Today's Posts" link on the navigation. So if you take a few days break, you can click on "View Unread Posts" and see everything that's happened since then.
B) Same as above, but with the intent of me changing the domain.
This will take time, and cost me some money. But I could do this and have some sort of general sports name domain.
Another thing to consider is that on here, this feels more private and intimate. If options 2A or 2B were taken, it would be a part of something a little larger. Which might not be desired, if people don't want to read those other things or other people.
And again, the domain and banner have nothing to do with the Pistons on my forum, so it wouldn't have the same feel.
I would have liked to have been able to import @roscoe36's forum into mine, but there's understandably security risks with him giving his DB content to me (even if he were to clean it). I would have liked it though just to have preserved 12 years of history. Also, I can't say for certain whether the import would have worked. I've never done it before, and there might be problems that came up during the process.
If people are happy here, then no worries.
