With previous trades, this would have been frustrating. But in the current situation, good for him. We knew he was awesome and that is why he was tradable. Will be more interesting watching the playoffs this year with some former tigers sprinkled about.

Man, this season has gotten very depressing.
- Victor Martinez: just had surgery for irregular heartbeat - Michael Fullmer: just had elbow surgery - Miguel Cabrera: just got back from 6 game suspension and then left due to back issue. Ausmus quoted as saying that he thinks he'll probably have back issues for the rest of his career. - Castellanos experiment at 3rd base has ended. - Joe Jiminez (super prospect) has settled in with an 11.93 ERA - Rondon sitting at a 10.91 ERA - Anibel Sanchez still sucks- 7.43 ERA in 82 innings pitched. Currently pitching rehab in the minors. - Jordan Zimmerman proving that his signing was horrible. 6.18 ERA in 150 innings pitched. Missing next game with a neck issue. - Jose Iglesias and Dixon Machado both out on Paternity leave
Trades: Verlander + cash traded for Franklin Perez + Daz Cameron + Jake Rogers Upton traded for Grayson Long + cash + a player to be named later Avila + Wilson traded for Isaac paredes + Jeimer Candelario + a player to be named later JD Martinez traded for Dawel Lugo + Sergio Alcantara + Jose King Pelfry released for nothing

I am a big fan of stealth tanking. We can do this. No stealth involved here. That's true about the Tigers. The Pistons were terrible at tanking over the last decade. We would get eliminated from the playoffs with a month left in the year and then go on winning streaks to end the season.

I usually don't think it affects lottery position too much. Plus I don't think a pick number is as important the GM who makes the pick. There was a team in 2006-2007 which went 5-17 over their last 22 games, which I calculated was the worst in the NBA over that stretch. Yet fans were saying they should have lost more. Not sure how much worse you can do than worst in the league during a stretch.

what usually happens is Pistons nominal .410 winning % goes up to .500 over the last 10 games.

Unfortunately, in baseball, getting the 1st pick doesn't do a lot for you. It's a small fraction of your lineup and the player won't see the light of day for years.
Here are the recent #1 picks: 2017- Royce Lewis 2016- Mickey Moniak 2015- Dansby Swanson 2014- Brady Aiken 2013- Mark Appel 2012- Carlos Correa 2011- Gerrit Cole 2010- Bryce Harper 2009- Stephen Strasburg 2008- Tim Beckham 2007- David Price 2006- Luke Hochevar 2005- Jason Upton
So, the odds of getting a really good player is high, but it just takes a while for most to develop.

Well, 2018 is going to be very ugly for the Detroit Tigers, but our minor league system has certainly gotten stronger this summer. We have some nice pitching depth in the minors. We just need a couple of guys to break out and get us moving in the right direction. Guys like Boyd and Norris need to take a positive step, as well as Fullmer. Hopefully, we sign a couple of decent mid-level free agents this winter just to make 2018 a bit more bearable until we are ready to contend again. We need the old Miggy to come back, too, or at least something resembling him.

The Astros got the #1 pick for 3 straight years. They tanked proper. And now they are a contender. Hopefully we don't have to be as bad for as long. But toss in the ownership situation post-Mr. I and it's not looking great.

But toss in the ownership situation post-Mr. I and it's not looking great. In many ways, Mr. I is why we are where we are now. He discarded the farm system and went all-in on free agent spending in order to buy a world championship. I was all for it and we came darn close a couple of times. It was a great run. Now, we pay the price as we are saddled with big contracts of old, non-performers (Miggy, Victor, Zimmermann, etc.). It would be nice for a quick turnaround and see us contending in 2019, but a lot of things would have to fall into place for that to happen.

Man, Verlander is tearing it up for Houston. 6 runs allowed in 5 games or something like that. He's their ace.
